Last week I told you about our plans to rebuild our bedroom closet from the ground up.

closet layout plans

I thought I’d drop in with a progress update. We emptied the closet, which was a task in itself. Removing wire shelving is easy, but it leaves a mess. Always try to remove a screw, then pull the anchor out. If the screw is still in (or nail, in this case), the anchor will be expanded a rip a big hole in the wall. Sigh.

The giant holes were unavoidable, but that’s why joint compound exists.

I patched the holes, let the joint compound dry, gently sanded it, then repeated. Some holes were good with one layer, others took up to three. After the patches were dry and smooth, I brushed on a layer of primer. Paint + unprimed joint compound = patchy yucky paint.

That’s where we are now. I’ve purchased the wood for the shelves, so I’ll be priming those soon. I think I might use an oil-based primer, just because I have some lying around and I’d like to get rid of it.

  1. Deconstruct the closet
  2. Patch and prime holes in the wall
  3. Paint walls
  4. Cut shelves to size
  5. Prime shelves
  6. Paint shelves
  7. Hang shelves
  8. Paint brackets to blend
  9. Install new light fixture
  10. Install two clothing rods
  11. Move our stuff back

Have you made any changes to a closet space to accommodate more stuff?
