Okay, okay. I didn’t really cry. But I was close to it! Even if I had, I’m allowed it – I’m hormonal and pregnant, people!

Installing this new drum light was one of the most frustrating projects we’ve ever done. Not at all because of the light! Which, before I start whining, let’s take a look at the old business.

And the new light:

I’m always on the prowl for a good deal on a light fixture. I am NOT interested in spending more than $200 (really, $150) on a light. So when I got an email blast from Lamps Plus Open Box – something I did not know existed! – I was pumped.

To add to my cheapness frugality, I’m fairly picky. It’s mostly a healthy, “If I’m going to spend money, I better make sure I like it” mentality. I had an idea of what I wanted: flush or semi-flush mount drum light with at least three sockets for standard bulbs. And, preferably a design that’s easy to clean since bugs love to die in light fixtures.

Like magic, Lamps Plus Open Box had just that. For $99 (regularly $150) and free shipping, we scored a pretty, neutral light. (It’s actually listed on sale at Lamps Plus now!)

Okay, so back to the crying. We shut off the power and took down the fan. Easy peasy.

Not easy? Removing the wretched bracket that was attached to the fixture box. Holy stripped screw, Batman. We took turns and after 40 minutes (wish I was joking), we finally got that screw out. With each go, the screw’s head got worse. I was so close to having a meltdown. Actually, I may have had a meltdown. I don’t remember. I may have had a rage blackout?

You can imagine the relief when we finally got the new light up. It’s great and it’s nice to not worry about whacking our heads with a low-hanging pull chain. Look how different the room is! I mean, it’s a little barebones now. But it is on its way.

Do you have any go-to online outlets for good deals? Share your secret. (And, for the record, Lamps Plus Open Box has no affiliation with this post, I’m just a fan.)

One Response to Warning: Light Fixture Installation May Induce Crying

installing light fixtures is the worst. The parts never match up. I think installing lights is the closet David and I have ever come to serious fight.
